Kareem Abdul Jabbar rejoins the Los Angeles Lakers organization for his 1rst season on Phil Jackson's staff as a Special Assistant Coach. In this position, Abdul Jabbar will accompany the team to Hawaii for training camp and will work with the Lakers players throughout the NBA season at all home practices and help tutor and develop the team's big men.

"Kareem was one of the best centers to ever play the game of basketball. His skills and talent on the court were truly extraordinary and we look forward to having Kareem help our big men develop their skills and tutor them on what it takes to be a successful NBA player in this league."

Kareem originally joining the Los Angeles Lakers back in 1975, when Abdul Jabbar left the game in 1989 at age 42, no NBA player had ever scored more points, blocked more shots, won more Most Valuable Player Awards, played in more All Star Games or logged more seasons. His list of personal and team accomplishments are perhaps the most awesome in league history:

Abdul Jabbar worked briefly as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers at the end of the 1999-2000 NBA season and most recently was a scout for the New York Knicks.
